I really love Type O Negative. Like, probably an unhealthy amount. When Peter Steele passed away in 2010, it left a huge hole in the gothic/doom metal world. I respect that the band couldn’t continue without him, but man, did it suck. That signature blend of dark romance, crushing heaviness, and brooding atmosphere was unmatched. And I needed more of it.

Then along came October Noir.

Never hiding the fact that they took musical cues from Type O Negative, October Noir proudly wears their influences on their sleeves. But they’re not a clone; they’re the next best thing in the gothic/doom metal genre. They channel that same eerie, melancholic vibe with deep, haunting vocals and doom-laden instrumentals, bringing the essence of Type O into a new era.

The group hails from Florida, but you wouldn’t know it from their latest video, Tourniquet. It starts in a snowy forest, with the keyboardist, Doug Lane, playing in a frosty clearing. When frontman Tom Noir’s vocals come in—haunting as ever—he, too, is left out in the cold. According to the band’s comments during the live premiere on YouTube, it was absolutely freezing, and the rest of the band was smart enough to film their parts inside a wooden shack. (Smart move. lol.)

This video also marks the band’s first time utilizing AI, and the results are seamless. It’s not every day you see a woman engulfed in flames and wonder if it was real or not. The visual effects blend effortlessly with the band’s aesthetic, making Tourniquet a mesmerizing watch.

If you’re like me and need a gothic/doom metal fix, I highly recommend checking out October Noir. They carry the torch of the genre with style, passion, and just the right amount of eerie atmosphere.
