Music has always been more than just a hobby for me—it’s been a lifelong journey filled with powerful moments and unforgettable experiences. It all began when I was 16, with a single music video that changed everything. I still remember the day I stumbled upon Megadeth’s “Sweating Bullets” on TV. There was something so intense, so raw in the sound and imagery that it hit me like a lightning bolt. That was the moment I fell in love with heavy metal, and there was no turning back.
Not long after, my biological father gave me my first guitar. It was one of those pivotal moments in life where you feel a door opening. I spent hours with that guitar, figuring out chords, learning to make sounds that mirrored what I felt inside. I wasn’t just playing notes—I was pouring out every ounce of passion, frustration, and joy. Before long, I was completely hooked, practicing as much as I could and diving deeper into the world of music.
After years of honing my skills, I started playing with various local bands around Tucson. We were all passionate, all driven by the same love for music and the same desire to perform. But it was my time with the band One Eye Open that really stands out. This wasn’t your typical rock band; we had something unique. We added a flute to our sound, which created this blend that people often described as “Jethro Tull meets Nirvana.” It was rock music with a twist, and we loved every second of it.
With One Eye Open, we played countless shows. We performed in small, dimly lit venues and packed houses. The fans were just as enthusiastic as we were. The energy from those performances was electric. Playing live feels surreal. It’s especially true when you’re in a band that brings something a little different to the stage. We might not have been famous, but we carved out our own little space in Tucson’s music scene, and that was enough.
Playing in bands taught me more than just music. It taught me about teamwork. It showed me how to connect with an audience. I learned about the incredible power music has to bring people together. Looking back, I wouldn’t trade those experiences for anything. They shaped me, giving me confidence and a voice both on and off stage.
For those who are interested, I’ll be sharing some of my favorite resources. I will also give gear recommendations and music insights in future posts. Whether you’re a beginner or someone who’s been playing for years, I hope my journey can offer a little inspiration. Maybe it can even supply a few tips.
Stay tuned, keep rocking, and thanks for joining me on this musical ride. 🎸
